Promote greenery

May 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:05 am IST

Trees give us fresh air, pure water, food, dress, paper, shelter, and so on, but also regulate global warming and climate change. To promote greenery, the local bodies can offer concessions in house tax for people who grow at least two trees per house. In the same way, the number of trees to be grown in case of hospitals or hotels may be increased to a minimum of 10 depending upon the number of rooms. In case of industries, growing trees should be mandatory. Request the authorities concerned to take steps to make the district green.

Upgrade

polytechnic

The government polytechnic in Tiruchi should be upgraded to an engineering college. This college would be closer to the National Institute of Technology. The city would get one more engineering college with very less investment and expenditure for government. Needy middle class will have a good college with minimum fee.

Rebuild road

The junction between Collector office road and Dindugal Road is in shambles. This is one of the busiest turnings in Tiruchi. The completion of the bridge will take another few years and till then this will remain like this? Good roads are topped up for no reason and bad roads are left behind. It is only about 150 metres of the road to be relayed. Will the concerned authorities act immediately.

Don’t reduce

interest rate

Banks decreasing fixed deposit interest rate will affect a large section of people. Most of the retired people invest their money in fixed deposits. Decreasing interest rates has a bad impact and people move towards private finance companies which are not safe. Hence RBI should not decrease the interest further.

Revise timings

There is demand for trains to Tirupati. To satisfy the demands partially the southern railway authorities should consider revising the train timings of the Vaigai Express (12636) to start at 6 a.m. from Madurai to reach Villupuram at 10.40 a.m. to provide a link to the Villupuram-Kharagpur SF Express (22604/22606) and the Tirupati Express (16053) from Chennai. A Link Intercity Express should be introduced from Tiruchi to Tirupati via Virudhachalam, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, to link to TPTY-CBE/SBC Intercity Express at Katpadi.

No water in

train toilet

Last Tuesday, when I travelled by the Mangalore Chennai Express (16859) from Chennai Egmore to Tiruchi, there was no water in the coach toilet. It portrays the lethargic attitude of the staff. Foul odour emanated from toilet. When will the day come, when we can see hygienic toilets?

Srirangam,

Signal not working

A four-road junction which is located in No. 1 tollgate is a nightmare to pedestrians. A single signal is erected facing Lalgudi Road alone which is not functioning properly. Since no centralised electronic signal has been installed to control vehicular traffic from other directions, not a day passes without accidents. Besides, zebra crossing is to be marked to ease pedestrians as public are crossing roads by risking their lives.

Have more DEMU coaches

The evening passenger train (56852) bound to Karaikal from Tiruchi Junction (departure time 4.30 p.m.) is catering to the needs of the staff of Goldenrock shops and GOC diesel shed apart from school/college students, State, and other Union government, and BHEL employees. As train fares are cheaper than bus, the public opt for it. Previously, 10 ordinary coaches used to be attached to this train.

Even these 10 coaches were not sufficient to cater to the needs of ever-increasing demands of the public and these coaches were always overflowing and with a nightmarish experience the gullible commuters were travelling in this over-crowded train cursing their stars. Now these coaches have been replaced with DEMU coaches which comprise just seven coaches, which are not sufficient as both the ends of the coaches are occupied by driver’s cabin and generators. The Divisional Railway Manager should take stock of the situation and attach 3 more coaches to this train.

Change of numbers

The Government of Tamil Nadu had ordered the change of house plot numbers many years ago. This was to ensure that locating a house would be easy. Even 10 years after this, people are still using the new and old numbers. Either the government authorities must order people to stop using the old numbers or people should come forward to drop the old numbers. In this computer and information technology age this confusion must be eradicated so that GPRS driven address finding can easily trace the addresses by the visitors.
