K. Nagar, which was developed about 30 years ago, is one of the top revenue generating localities to the Tiruchi Corporation thanks to the presence of a large number of houses, ranging from small to palatial bungalows.

The locality that includes many residential colonies such as LIC Nagar, Sundar Nagar, Ranga Nagar, Ayyappa Nagar, Indian Bank colony, Thendral Nagar, Rajaram salai, Udayanpatti and others is in no way inferior to other prominent localities in Tiruchi. It continues to be a premier residential locality. But, to the dismay of hundreds of residents, most of them government officers and employees, K.K. Nagar still languishes with worst roads.

A recent visit to Ranga Nagar, which is part of K.K. Nagar, revealed that it lacked civic maintenance and amenities. Most of the roads had been totally battered, causing hardship to the road users. Many of them had developed a number of potholes. Some of the roads had almost become mud roads. Several of them had no sign that they were recently laid.

The entire K.K. Nagar area is yet to be provided with the underground drainage system. With no other options a section of residents let domestic waste water in open places resulting flow of sewage water on roads. In some areas, vacant plots have been conveniently converted into storage points of domestic waste causing health hazard to people particularly women, children and elders.

Enquiries with the residents revealed that more than 15 years had passed since the civic body laid roads in several residential colonies in K.K. Nagar. It had not even carried out patch-up works, generally done soon after the monsoon season, allege residents.

“Roads are pathetic. Many of them have turned as mud roads. They are unfit for vehicle movement,” says P. Ramasamy, a resident in Ranga Nagar.

S. Ramakrishnan, president, Marumalarchi Mandram, Ayyappa Nagar, said there were 67 roads in Ayyappa Nagar, Ananda Nagar, Indira Nagar and Subramaniya Nagar. Except four roads, which were recently laid, others had almost become mud roads.

The issue would invariably become a point of agenda in the association’s meeting every month. They would pass resolutions demanding the civic body to lay new roads and implement UGD. However, there was no change in the ground reality till now.
