To sensitise media persons to issues affecting the third gender, the discriminations against them, and their rights, a workshop was held here on Saturday.

President of Salem Transgenders Welfare Association, Pooja, said that the discrimination against the third gender was prevalent for many years and called for creating awareness among the people to wipe it out.

She explained the various stigmas they face in society, including house owners refusing to accept them as tenants, discrimination in public places and others.

She wanted the media persons to bring out these real issues to the fore.

Transgenders who spoke on the occasion said that after the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment giving them the third gender status, they have a chance to move freely among the general public. But they said that they were still facing the discrimination.
