Faced with a situation in which Muslims are not able to avail themselves of the 3.5 per cent reservation in Tamil Nadu, the Islamic Literacy Movement of India (ILMI) has decided to offer free quality residential schooling to 100 students of the community to ensure their entry into professional courses, particularly engineering and medical.
Fifty boys and an equal number of girls who score more than 85 per cent marks in the SSLC examination will be eligible to attend the interview for final selection.
“The students will study at the Islamia Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Keezhakarai, where faculties from schools who had specialised in preparing students for professional courses will teach them,” ILMI founder Maulana S. Shamsudeen Qasimi told The Hindu .
It would cost Rs. 1 crore to meet the entire expenses of a batch and the ILMI would get 50 per cent of the amount as grant from the Union government under the Free Coaching and Allied Scheme for Minority Communities, already implemented in a few States, he said.
In Tamil Nadu, it is called Scheme-100.
Mr. Shamsudeen, who is also the Chief Imam of the Makka Masjid in Chennai, said the interview would be held in Tiruchi and Chennai after SSLC results were published.
“The objective is to increase the presence of Muslims in government jobs and professional courses. Today, except in engineering courses, Muslims are not able to fill the vacancies reserved for them,” said Mr. Shamsudeen, who is already running an IAS academy, not just for Muslims, but students of other minority communities.
