Women police deployed near Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant on Saturday.

Prohibitory orders extended to more Kudankulam areas

Anticipating renewed protests from the Idinthakarai-based anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project protesters in the wake of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board’s (AERB) permission to load enriched uranium fuel in the first reactor, security arrangements in and outside the KKNPP premises have been strengthened.

Collector R. Selvaraj has extended prohibitory orders proclaimed under Section 144 of the Cr. P. C. around KKNPP from August 11 to 6 p.m. of September 10. In a statement, he said that entry of anti-nuclear groups and political parties and those backing them into Kudankulam would undermine the tranquillity of the region. “Hence, the prohibitory orders clamped in areas within two km of the KKNPP premises is being extended to seven km”

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, V. Varadharaju, who is camping at Kudankulam along with Superintendent of Police Vijayendra S. Bidari since Saturday morning, said that the deployment of additional police force along the coastal stretch near KKNPP was not an unusual development. “As a precautionary measure, we have deployed 12 companies of police force as we anticipate some renewed protest by the anti-KKNPP groups.”

Fishermen strike work

To express their protest at the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board’s green signal for loading fuel in the first reactor, fishermen of coastal hamlets in the district will not go fishing and all shops at Kudankulam will remain closed till the Madras High Court delivers its verdict on the cases pertaining to KKNPP.
