The annual festival of the famous Poondi Matha Basilica near Tirukattupalli in Thanjavur district commences on Wednesday with the hoisting of the sacred flag. The festival would go on till May 15.
The Bishop of Kumbakonam Diocese Anthonysamy will hoist the sacred flag to signal the commencement of the festivities. Special mass prayers would be celebrated during the festival days. Aspects of Mariology would be explained to the devotees during the special prayer meetings.
The special decorated chariot festival would be conducted on the night of May 14 followed by a mass headed by the Bishop.
