For the second day running, leaders of political parties sought stringent action against the accused in the Pollachi sex scandal.
CPI (M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan questioned why the ruling party took action against its functionary ‘Bar’ Nagarajan only after a political and social uproar over the serial sexual assault and blackmail case.
“Just like in the Nirmala Devi case, they are taking action only against those who are available in order to protect high-level, powerful people,” he alleged.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thol. Thirumavalavan said the party would hold a demonstration in Chennai on March 14, and sought a high-level judicial probe to be ordered by the Madras High Court.
Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani and Tamil Manila Congress chief G.K. Vasan too sought action against the accused.
‘Complete investigation’
AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran demanded that the case be sent to the CBI.
“How did the Coimbatore SP say categorically that no politicians were involved in the case? Have they already completed the investigation fully to come to this conclusion?” he questioned. Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan met DGP T.K. Rajendran “to express anxiety” over the scandal.
Mr. Haasan said it was the appeal of the police force that no one blow the issue out of proportion for gaining political mileage.
He appealed to the media and others not to release the identities of the victims. He said the police releasing the identity of the complainant was an “unpardonable crime.”
In Coimbatore, BJP leader Muralidhar Rao said the AIADMK had already taken action against its functionary. “We hope the government will be sensitive and justice-oriented in this case,” he said.
Asked if the incident would affect the AIADMK-fronts poll prospects, Mr. Rao said that it is paramount that stern action is taken against all accused and such “single incidents” would not affect the poll prospects.
