Police use force to clear road blockade

October 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - ERODE:

An hour-long traffic obstruction along Salem - Cochin Highway on Tuesday night caused by public outrage triggered by a fatal accident purportedly due to alleged extortion from load vehicles by a Highway Patrol team at Nasiyanur bend along the highway prompted the police to use force for resumption of traffic flow.

According to local sources, the driver of a load-laden tempo traveller Kailasam (56), who was reportedly proceeding to Salem from Tirupur, was crossing the road after allegedly paying bribe to the patrol team when he was fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle.

Police had to use force when the local public, who had blocked the road complaining about ‘regular collection’ by the patrol team, refused to budge even after the persuasion by Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy.

No arrests were made, official sources said.
