The Judicial Magistrate Court at Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district has directed the Pazhavoor police to investigate a petition filed in the court on Tuesday seeking criminal proceedings against actor Kamal Haasan for his alleged remarks against Mahabharata during a recent television interview.

The actor had in an interview, in an indirect reference to Mahabharata said “The country reads about the book in which a woman (Draupadi) was used as a pawn and was gambled away.”

Objecting to this, V. Athinatha Sundaram, a trader from Pazhavoor on the Tirunelveli-Kanniyakumari border, filed a petition praying for initiation of criminal proceedings against the actor for hurting religious sentiments. Claiming to have unflinching faith in Hinduism, the petitioner said he has been deeply hurt by Mr. Kamal Haasan’s derogatory remarks against Mahabharata during his television interview.

After recording the petitioner’s sworn statement on Tuesday in the presence of his counsel Kanthimathinathan, Judicial Magistrate Senthilkumar ordered the Pazhavoor police to inquire into the charges made in the petition against the actor and file a report in the court.
