: The City Police organised a massive awareness rally here on Tuesday to tell the public, particularly the two-wheeler riders, in clear terms that they should wear helmet from July 1 or be prepared to lose their driving licences until they purchase a protective headgear.
After the rally was flagged off by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range and Commissioner of Police (In-Charge), Tirunelveli City, S. Murugan at VOC Ground, over 300 policemen and homeguards traversed the city in their bikes with helmets and reached the starting point after crossing Palayamkottai Bus-Stand, Vaeinthaankulam new bus-stand, Melapalayam, Tirunelveli Town, Pettai and Tirunelveli Junction.
Even as the police band sitting in a police vehicle was playing music and leading the rally, the pillion riders carried helmet awareness placards that appealed to the public to wear helmets to ensure a safe journey while riding the two-wheeler.
Speaking to reporters after flagging off the rally, Dr. Murugan said bike riders, who dared to violate the dictum on wearing helmets from July 1, would lose their driving licence which would be returned only on the production of the receipt showing the purchase of a quality helmet.
“The pillion riders should also wear helmets,” he clarified. Deputy Commissioners of Police T.P. Suresh Kumar and Rajan and senior police officers participated.
