The city police on Thursday registered case against AIADMK and DMK councillors and others as they were involved in a scuffle during the council meeting here on Wednesday. A case was also registered against 18 DMK functionaries for blocking the road over the incident.
On Wednesday, DMK councillor V. Deivalingam of ward 10 was attacked and pushed out of the council hall by AIADMK councillors when he demanded discussion of people’s problems instead of praising the return of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The two sides exchanged heated words and later DMK councillors received blows and were pushed out.
DMK Central District unit in-charge R. Rajendran along with others blocked the Cherry Road, opposite to the Corporation office.
Police personnel tried to remove them, but later pacified them who withdrew the road block.
Later Mr. Deivalingam got admitted to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital followed by four AIADMK councillors who claimed they were attacked by DMK councillors and their family members.
Based on a complaint from Mr. Deivalingam, Hasthampatti police registered a case under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 294 b (uttering obscene words in public place), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC against AIADMK councillors T. Thiyagarajan, L. Jayaprakash, N. Jamuna Rani, K. Bama, S.S. Krishnamoorthy and five others.

Mariyappan, case was registered against Deivalingam, his father Venkadachalam, brother Ilavarasan, relatives and 17 others under Sections 143, 294 b, 323, 341 and 506 (ii) of IPC and Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women act, 1998.
In another complaint by the Village Administrative Officer V. Rajasekar, case was registered against DMK’s Rajendran, Deivalingam and 16 others for blocking the road.
No arrests have been made so far and police personnel were posted for security on the Corporation office premises.
Demonstration
Meanwhile, Mr. Rajendran told presspersons that condemning the brutal attack on Deivalingam and the police inaction to prevent the attacks, the DMK’s Central District unit would organise a demonstration near Salem Collectorate on Friday.
He questioned whether unleashing barbarism is democratic legacy and said Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the police are responsible for the incident.
