Police not cooperating with CBI in Ramajeyam murder probe: MLA

Palaniswami denies charge against Q Branch

July 20, 2019 01:01 am | Updated 01:01 am IST - CHENNAI

I. Periyasamy (DMK) alleged in the Assembly on Friday that the State police personnel were not cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in many cases, including the murder of K.N. Ramajeyam (brother of former minister K.N. Nehru) and the Pollachi sex scam.

Speaking on the demand for grants for the Police Department, the Attur MLA said without the cooperation of the police, the CBI probe could not proceed any further. He alleged that the Q Branch of the State police had been primarily used to collect intelligence about specific groups (community) only to “satisfy some people.”

Denying Mr. Periyasamy’s charge, Mr. Palaniswami said the Q Branch had served efficiently in several cases. When Mr. Periyasamy pointed out that anti-alcohol activist and advocate Nandhini had been arrested in a contempt of court case only a few days before her wedding, Law Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam clarified that she was arrested only on a specific direction from the court. He pointed out that the conferring IPS to State police personnel should be made at regular intervals and urged for at least a day off for the police in a week.

Raise sought

The DMK MLA insisted on a hike in extra time remuneration (ETR), which stood at ₹200 a day while a one-day salary would be about ₹1,200.

Mr. Periyasamy alleged it was only because of the State government’s “ego” that retired IPS officer A.G. Ponn Manickavel was not extended cooperation in his probe into various idol theft cases.

But the Chief Minister said the number of cases registered during Mr. Manickavel’s tenure were less.
