Police nab six-member gang involved in several thefts

66 sovereigns of jewellery, cars, pistol recovered

Tirupattur police have busted a gang of six persons involved in several cases of house breaks, vehicle thefts and dacoity and recovered 66 sovereigns of gold jewellery from them. The gang was involved in several crimes in Vellore, neighbouring districts of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in the State, and Bangalore.

A team led by M. Gunasekaran, inspector of Tirupattur Town police station, nabbed four members of the gang on Sunday, following which two other accomplices were also arrested.

The arrested persons are – ‘Kunichi’ Govindasamy (30) and Manoj (26) of Kunichi, Kumar (28) of Pochampalli, Velu (35) of Mathur, Ramesh (28) of Gobichettipalayam and Tamizh alias Pagalavan (26) of Bangalore.

Police said the six were involved in at least 14 confirmed cases of property offences. They were involved in house breaks, vehicle thefts and dacoity.

“They had also robbed money from people at gun point. We have seized 66 sovereigns of gold jewels, an air pistol and two cars, including a stolen sports utility vehicle that was used in the crimes, from them. They had purchased the second car using the stolen money,” a police officer said.

Habitual offenders

The six were habitual offenders and some of them had been imprisoned earlier. In fact, police said Govindasamy had been in jail in connection with a murder for gain case near Pochampalli.

“We have confirmed the involvement of the gang in 14 cases and are verifying if they were involved in any other case,” he said.

The police have been tracking the movement of the gang. On a tip off on Sunday, they intercepted a SUV near Rajavur junction at Kandhili and nabbed Govindasamy and three others who were travelling the vehicle. Based on information during inquiry, police nabbed two other gang members.

They have also been booked under Arms Act for possessing the pistol. All six persons were remanded on Monday.
