The district police have launched a crackdown on organisations functioning on the pretext of protecting human rights, and arrested four persons.
The crackdown followed reports sought by the Madras High Court on the steps taken to eradicate entities, claiming to be human rights organisations, and action taken against them.
In a late evening operation on Tuesday, the police filed cases against five offices, functioning as Citizens for Human Rights Movement and Human Rights Organisation, and arrested the office-bearers, Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan said.
Those arrested included R. Kandasamy (50), R. Saminathan (40), G. Danraj (39) and R. Boopathy, the police said. They were arrested under sections 170, 420 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) read with section 5 of Emblem and names (prevention of improper use) Act, 1950. They were produced before a Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody.
In Sivaganga
Six organisations functioning as human rights organisations were booked and three of their office-bearers were arrested and remanded in judicial custody in Sivaganga district, Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis said.
The government amended the Societies Registration Act based on the recommendations of State Human Rights Commission that use of words “Human Rights” should be prohibited while registering organisations as they functioned as “kangaroo courts”.
