50 personnel searched the premises at the behest of DIG

A surprise raid was conducted on the Vellore prison premises on Saturday. More than 50 police personnel, led by Vellore Deputy Superintendent of Police in-charge E. Radhakrishnan, conducted a raid at the prison located on the outskirts of the fort town.

Sources in the police said the raid followed an order by Superintendent of Police Pravesh Kumar based on the recommendations made by Deputy Inspector-General (Prisons), Vellore range, K. Jayabharathi.

Routine check

The raid gained significance in the wake of the seizure of mobile phones inside the prison recently. The raid, which began at 6 a.m., went on till 8.30 a.m.

Sources this was a routine check conducted to find out if any irregularities or illegalities were taking place on the prison premises.

On Saturday, the prisoners block, including special cells, toilets, and walkways were searched to check if any prisoners had mobile phones, cash or drugs.

The cells were checked to see if any additional facilities had been provided to prisoners.

During the two-and-half-hour search, the police did not find any illegal or unlawful items, police sources added.
