The police have decided to revive the Salem Police Band after a gap of 18 years.
The band troupe was launched in 1993. The police personnel, and the members of the Home Guards Movement who were proficient in playing musical instruments formed part of the troupe.
Apart from attending police and other government functions such as Independence Day, and Republic Day, the band entertained people during marriages, and other private functions.
The band attained so much fame that it was invited for functions held even in Chennai.
The troupe was disbanded as its members were posted to fill the vacancies that arose following the creation of City Police Commissionerate in 1997.
The musical instruments were lying idle.
A. Amalraj, City Police Commissioner, held discussion with G. Subbulakshmi, Superintendent of Police, and other senior police officials at the Armed Reserve ground on Monday.
It was decided at the meeting to revive the band.
Various musical instruments worth Rs. 3 lakh will be purchased.
About 45 police personnel and Home Guards will be recruited for the troupe and training will be imparted to them by renowned musicians. Mr. Amalraj and Ms. Subbulakshmi inspected old musical instruments too.
