Seeking removal of salt pans coming up around a waterbody supplying drinking water to their village, a section of people from Siluvaipuram near Vembar submitted a petition to Collector M. Ravikumar on Monday.

The petitioners said the salt water from the salt pans formed near the ‘Tharuvai’, the drinking water source for Vembar area, had entered the waterbody to make the water unfit for consumption. Moreover, the salt pan industries had encroached upon a portion of the ‘Tharuvai’.

The administration should retrieve the encroached land, and take steps to remove the salt pans established around the waterbody, they said.

A group of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadre submitted a petition, seeking the Collector’s presence when the vehicles of educational institutions were being inspected during the summer vacation by Regional Transport Office officials.
