A habeas corpus petition has been filed before the Madras High Court seeking the production of Vidya Rani, daughter of the slain sandalwood smuggler, Veerappan, before the court.

The petitioner, Mariya Deepak, submitted that he and Vidya Rani (21) got married on March 30 last. Their marriage was registered nearly a month later.

On August 25, Muthulakshmi, the woman's mother, took her to her hometown on the pretext of performing a religious ceremony at Veerappan's Samadhi at Mecheri in Salem district. After this, the petitioner said he lost contact with his wife. He alleged that his wife was in illegal custody.
