The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Indian Nursing Council and the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking immediate action against fake nursing institutions across the State.

A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and R. Mahadevan passed the order on a plea moved by Varaaki of Chennai with a direction to the authorities to file their reply within eight weeks.

According to the petitioner, many nursing colleges were functioning without proper infrastructure and approval from the authorities concerned in various parts of the State including Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

“The advertisements floated by such institutions claim that they have been recognised by organisations like the Bharatiya Seva Samaj (BSS) and the National Council for Vocational Research and Training (NCVRT).

“But these organisations are not government bodies; they are only private trusts and are not legally empowered to provide recognition to such nursing institutions,” the petitioner added.
