MADURAI

A public interest litigation petition has been filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking reconstruction of damaged roads, which were laid only a few months ago, in Virudhunagar district.

The petitioner, M. Thiagarajan of Virudhunagar, complained that the roads between Narikudi and Kalvimadai and Kattanur-Irunchurai and Seenianthal were badly damaged as they were not laid as per norms.

The petitioner complained that the contractor used substandard materials to lay the roads. A petition seeking relaying of roads was submitted to the district authorities, but no action had been initiated yet, he said.

Taking up the petition for hearing, a division bench of Justices M. Govindaraj and G.R. Swaminathan directed notice to Virudhunagar district authorities and the contractor, who completed the project.

Earlier, the High Court Bench, taking note of the bad state of the highway at Kappalur, called for a status report and observed that roads should be maintained in accordance with standards stipulated by the Indian Road Congress.
