‘Perundurai most advantageous for proposed AIIMS’

June 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - ERODE:

There is a sense of certainty among the public in the western region desirous of securing AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) for Perundurai that the State Government would consider the natural advantages of locating the facility on the vast premises of IRT Medical College.

The State Government recently made an evaluation of five locations and found Perundurai to be most advantageous, according to sources.

The nearly 350-acre location beside the Salem-Coimbatore four-lane road has three railway stations: Ingur, Perundurai and Erode close by.

Moreover, Coimbatore airport that was just one-hour drive away from Perundurai was connected to umpteen domestic destinations.

Establishment of AIIMS at Perundurai will be beneficial to all the four Southern States and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Palakkad in Kerala, Chamarajanagar in Karnataka and Kuppam in Andra Pradesh are only a few hours of drive away from Perundurai.

The four other proposed locations are Pudukottai town in Pudukottai district, Thoppur in Madurai district, Sengipatti in Thanjavur district, and Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram district.

Political and non-political entities in the Western region have already initiated campaigns highlighting the relatively higher advantages of locating the AIIMS in Perundurai.

The industrialised region of the State comprising Erode, Karur, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem and Karur districts has a dire necessity for top-notch tertiary care due to water and air pollution, according to the Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu Branch.

The CII has already made known its preference for location of AIIMS in Perundurai.
