A.G. Perarivalan, one of the life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, returned to the Vellore Central Prison for Men after his parole period came to an end on Tuesday. Perarivalan, escorted by police, reached the prison at 5 p.m.

On August 24, the State government had granted 46-year-old Perarivalan, a 30-day parole, following requests made by his mother, T. Arputham, to grant him ordinary leave so that he could visit his ailing father, T. Gnanasekaran alias Kuildasan.

Following another request from his mother to extend the ordinary leave, the government issued an order extending the parole by another 30 days on September 23. During his parole period, Perarivalan stayed at his residence at Jolarpet where several persons visited him for the first 30 days.

In fact, this was the first time in his 27 years of imprisonment that Perarivalan had come out on parole.
