‘People didn’t fall for DMK’s propaganda’

CM confident of his party-led alliance winning the forthcoming local body polls

Thanking the voters of Vikravandi and Nanguneri for ensuring the AIADMK’s victory in the byelections, party co-coordinator and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday said the people did not fall for the DMK-led Opposition’s lies.

“The people have realised the truth and have handed us this victory,” he said.

Addressing the media at the AIADMK’s office in Chennai, which wore a festive look, Mr. Palaniswami said the victory was secured thanks to the hard work put in by Ministers, party functionaries and leaders of alliance parties.

Terming the byelection results as historic, he alleged that DMK president M.K. Stalin and Opposition leaders had “spread lies through their campaigns across the State” during the Parliamentary polls and the byelections to 22 Assembly constituencies earlier this year. The people, he felt, believed those lies back then and voted for the Opposition.

“Now, the people have realised the truth, and this is precisely why they have handed us huge victories in Nanguneri and Vikravandi,” Mr. Palaniswami said, amid celebrations at the party headquarters.

He replied in the affirmative when asked whether the AIADMK’s alliance will continue. Mr. Palaniswami was also confident of his party-led alliance winning the forthcoming local body polls. When asked about the last-minute talks with the BJP for campaigning, he said: “Nothing like that. It is wrong [to say that]. All party leaders were invited [to campaign for us] and we invited them [BJP] too.”
