A peace meeting that was proposed to be held to solve the issues regarding construction of minars (towers) in a mosque in Tiruchengode was postponed after members of one side failed to attend it on Monday.

Members of Muslim community took up the work of constructing two minars at the old mosque near Tiruchengode old bus stand here recently. However, members of Hindu Munnani, led by Tiruchengode town president K. Chinnusamy, submitted a petition to Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy in June stating that the construction of 70-foot towers was carried out without obtaining permission from the municipality or the competent authority. They also said that temples were located in the area and the construction of towers would result in uneasy calm in the area. The Tiruchengode Municipality issued notice to the mosque administration and the work was halted.

However, the work resumed from August 31 and the Munnani members met the Collector on September 1 and submitted another petition. They said that installing loudspeakers in the towers would pave the way for enmity between the communities. Hence, they sought permanent ban for construction of the towers. The work was halted again. The Collector asked RDO, Tiruchengode, to convene a meeting to resolve the issue. Members of Hindu Munnai boycotted the meeting last week and also the meeting on Monday.
