A portion of the road near Mulvadi Gate in the city caved in on Thursday.
The road sank for about two feet and the corporation immediately placed a warning board while the traffic policeman cautioned the two-wheelers about the problem.
The road was dug by the corporation a few months ago for laying pipelines for the Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme. However, later it was revealed that the land belongs to the Railways and the corporation had dug the road without permission.
Also, flyovers were proposed in the area. Hence, the corporation immediately closed the pit and the road was re-laid. However, continuous rains in the past three days in the city led to loosening of soil in the area resulting in the road caving in.
Officials said that incessant rains led to the problem and restoration work would be taken up at the earliest.
They said that the trench would be filled with mud and the road would be re-laid.
But, motorists and road users urged immediate action before untoward incidents happen. “The road is located at a prime location. Work has to be carried on a war-footing,” they said.
On Thursday, buses and other vehicles were diverted through First Agraharam Street and only two-wheelers were allowed through the road.
