Efforts to motivate palm tree workers

April 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Sayalkudi (Ramanathapuram):

Seeking to motivate the palm tree workers and protect the dwindling Palmyrah, the Tamil Nadu Palm Products Development Board has re-introduced the palm tree climbing competition here on Sunday after a gap of 57 years. After the Tamil Nadu government passed a Government Order (GO) in December last, including the palm tree climbing as part of the rural sports, the board organised the event at the coastal Kadaladi block, famous for Palm trees and production palm jaggery.

The event, which was held here way back in 1958, received good response from climbers when the board announced the competition two weeks ago, said R. Muthukumar, Managing Director of the Ramanathapuram-Sivaganga District Palmyrah Jaggery Co-operation Marketing Federation. He said 55 participants from the districts of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Dindigul took part.
