The Narcotics Control Bureau, Chennai Zonal Unit, arrested two persons on Tuesday on charges of smuggling over 400 kg of ganja in a lorry from Andhra Pradesh to Thoothukudi.

Based on a tip-off, a team of officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau intercepted a lorry laden with chemical components at Madhavaram toll gate. The officers found a huge quantity of ganja concealed inside.

S. Muthuraja and A. Abdul Razak, residents of Virudhunagar district, were arrested for smuggling the contraband.

A. Bruno, zonal director, said, “This is the largest quantity of ganja seized by the NCB in recent days. The contraband was sourced from Andhra Pradesh, loaded in the lorry and covered with tarpaulin. The lorry was also carrying Alumina Hyderate from Vijayanagaram and going towards Thoothukudi. We have seized 425 kg of ganja packed in 14 plastic bags from the duo. Further investigation is under way.”

The traffickers were booked under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
