Orientation for researchers on use of drug carriers

Researchers received wide orientation on use of drug carriers for targeted, controlled and prolonged therapeutic delivery of drugs with reduced site effect, improved efficacy and reduced treatment cost, at a national seminar organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, recently.

The two-day conference titled ‘Drug Carriers in Medicine and Biology’ that focussed on acceleration of research for developing efficient carriers for potent drugs was supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board - Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Defence Research and Development Organization, New Delhi.

About 80 external delegates of the multi-disciplinary science conference, including B.Tech., B.Sc., M.Tech., M.Sc., and Ph.D. students, medical personals and faculty members in the area of biotechnology, pharmacy, chemistry, biochemistry and nano technology from all over India, were informed that the global market for drug delivery system (DDS) in 2014 was around 160 billion US Dollars and that it was expected to reach 192 billion US Dollars by 2018 at the compounded annual growth rate of five per cent.

About 170 B.Tech. and M.Tech. biotechnology students of the host institution also took part in the conference that was inaugurated by Anil Kumar Dwivedi, Chief Scientist, Central Drug Research Institute-CSIR, Lucknow, in the presence of Conference Convenor and Professor of Department of Biotechnology K. Subramanian.

The inaugural session was marked by release of souvenir by Dr. Dwivedi.

Chief Executive of BIT A.M. Natarajan and Principal In-charge R. Saravanan, presided over the function.

Speakers correlated the significance of the conference for promotion of further advancement in drug carriers to meet the healthcare demands in medical field.

The technical sessions were handled by faculty of Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai; professors of Pharmacy colleges in Coimbatore and Ooty; and eminent scientists from Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, Syngene International Pvt. Ltd, and Biocon Park, Bangalore.
