The Madras High Court on Tuesday restrained the online sale of firecrackers till November 15. Justice S. Vaidyanathan passed the interim order on a public interest litigation petition filed by M. Shaik Abdullah, a member of the Chennai Metro Fireworks Dealers Association. The petitioner had sought a complete ban on online sale of crackers.

Listing out the names of websites through which online sale of firecrackers was on, the litigant feared that it might pave the way for sale of Chinese crackers which had already been banned by the court. He wondered how could sale of fireworks be allowed online without any regulations in place. The petitioner wanted the city police to act against online sales.
