Opposition slams Budget proposals

March 27, 2012 02:28 am | Updated 02:28 am IST - CHENNAI:

Fresh tax imposts would make the people realise their mistake in electing this government, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.

Asked about new taxes in the budget to the tune of Rs 1500 crore, he said the government could have imposed more taxes, as that would have led to realisation among the people about the mistake.

Talking to reporters after a meeting of DMK MLAs, Mr Karunanidhi said the meeting discussed the action plan for the party during the Assembly session.

He said the Finance Minister had to spend a long time reading the budget. “There was no need for him to have done so, as he could have restricted himself to encomiums with which he began.”

Welcoming the VAT exemption on various products, including wheat and insulin, TNCC president B.S. Gnanadesikan said the Centrally funded schemes found mention in several places. However, contradictorily, the budget has noted that the Centre has not extended a helping hand. Seeking counselling centres for students from SSLC, he termed it as a budget with a mix of old and new. MDMK general secretary Vaiko said the budget lacked in long term vision for growth.
