Even as election fever is set to mount and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa likely to file her nomination papers on Friday, the Chennai District Election Office could achieve only 72 per cent electoral roll purification in Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly Constituency.

Officials were given a deadline of Thursday for completing data entry for Aadhaar-linkage of electoral rolls in the first phase. Corporation workers pointed to the delay in obtaining funds for the programme from the Election Commission , leading to insufficient coverage.

Under National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme (NERPAP) of the Election Commission , data on Aadhaar number or e-mail ID or mobile number or landline phone number of all the electors in the Assembly constituencies in the district were expected to be collected by Corporation workers.

But the District Election Office will not be able to create an error-free identification system by removing duplications this by-election.

According to election officials, nomination papers were not filed on Thursday. Five candidates have filed nominations so far.

Rooms in Ripon Buildings and in Tondiarpet zonal office have been refurbished for the filing of nominations.
