October 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:06 am IST - Ramanathapuram:

A Naval officer serving in Indian Naval air station in Uchipuli, INS Parundu, was the latest victim to online cheating.

The commanding officer – in the rank of Captain – met Superintendent of Police N. M. Mylvahanan, a couple of days ago and explained as to how he was taken for a ride by an unknown person.

He told the SP that he had parted with the password to a person, who claimed to be from the customer care department of the bank, and found to his surprise that about Rs. 45,000 was siphoned off from his account, the SP said on Tuesday.

Uchipuli police registered a First Information Report and launched an investigation on the direction of the SP.

When contacted, the SP said that the call details of the caller were being traced and “we are following up the case”. The caller appeared to have obtained the details of the naval officer’s ATM card, and “we are looking into it,” the SP told The Hindu . The police had received a couple of similar complaints, he said.
