Five petty shops near Kamaraj statue in Gandhi Nagar were removed on Monday as part of an eviction drive.

Officials said that the shops were put up encroaching road space causing hardship to the commuters.

Several commuters have raised the issue with the officials.

A team of officials led by N. Mathivanan, Assistant Commissioner, Vellore Municipal Corporation, removed the encroachments. A bus shelter would be constructed for the commuters, they said. As tenders have been finalised, the work would commence soon, officials added.

Traffic changes

To ease traffic congestion near Chittoor bus stand in Katpadi, the traffic police have announced changes on Monday.

Buses from Katpadi should take a left near Anna Statue near Chittoor bus stand and take a ‘U’ turn to reach Vellore after alighting and picking up passengers.

Additional police force would be deployed for enforcing road discipline among motorists and violations would be dealt with spot fines, traffic police personnel said.

The bus drivers are advised not to park vehicles on carriage way and adhere to lane discipline and station buses only in designated stops, officials said.
