Officials directed to take precaution during monsoon

Tiruvannamalai Collector A. Gnanasekharan has asked the officials of the various departments to take precautionary measures to prevent damage during the Southwest monsoon.

Presiding over a consultation meeting convened by him at the Collectorate here on Monday to discuss monsoon preparedness measures, Mr. Gnanasekharan wanted the encroachments in all water bodies to be removed immediately. Sand bags should be kept ready, and the tanks and ponds should be desilted, he said.

The Collector wanted schools, colleges and marriage halls to be kept ready round-the-clock.

Trees which had fallen during rains or which get uprooted during the monsoon should be removed. Health and hospital officials should take steps to keep stocks of medicines and to keep all mobile medical teams ready for any emergency.

In the event of any damage due to the nature’s fury, officials should visit the affected places and take steps to accommodate those who might be rendered homeless in schools, colleges and marriage halls, he said.

The Collector asked the officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry to take all precautionary steps such as stocking of adequate medicines to prevent outbreak of diseases among cattle.

Civil supplies officials should ensure that full stocks of all essential commodities were available in the fair prices hops. The fire and rescue vehicles should be kept in 24-hour readiness by the Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation officials were asked to repair the defective electric posts and the damaged electric wires.

The Collector asked the officials of the revenue and rural development departments to keep the telecommunication facilities in good condition.

He said the helpline 1077 was available 24 hours. Phone number 232261 is also available for conveying vital information during an emergency. He asked the officials of all departments to be ready for emergency service.

M.S. Nainakannu, Chairperson of the Tiruvannamalai District Panchayat, S. Palani, District Revenue Officer and J. Sampath, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency and Umamaheswari, Revenue Divisional Officer, Tiruvannamalai participated in the meeting.
