Closer scrutiny:Agriculture Secretary Rajesh Lakhoni inspects anti-dengue work at Azhagiyapandiapuram in Tirunelveli district on Wednesday.

Agriculture Secretary Rajesh Lakhoni, who has camped here to monitor anti-dengue operations in the district, visited a few parts of the city and Maanur block on Wednesday.

Accompanied by Collector M. Karunakaran, Mr. Lakhoni inspected the work being carried out by the Corporation in Melapalayam, one of the most backward areas of the civic body, and interacted with residents to get their opinions on the work.

At Maanur, Mr. Lakhoni inspected the boys’ and girls’ higher secondary schools, police quarters, veterinary hospital, overhead tank and a few streets and told the officials to ensure cleanliness everywhere by clearing garbage on a daily basis.

He inspected the bus stand, anganwadi, pay-and-use toilets, public well and a few streets at Azhagiyapandiapuram.

As instructed by him, thorny bushes along the streets at Maanur and Azhagiyapandiapuram were cleared, and discarded plastic products, bottles, tyres, coconut shells collected and destroyed. By pouring phenol and waste oil in the water bodies in these two areas, potential mosquito breeding grounds were destroyed.

Bleaching powder was sprinkled in houses and in water tanks. Fogging was done indoor and outdoors. The residents were urged to drink only boiled drinking water and to visit the nearest primary health centre in case of fever.
