Of film shooting and attendant discomforts

Efforts are needed to ensure it does not affect TRAFFIC in a location

In the last few weeks, residents of Coimbatore had several opportunities to witness shooting of at least three movies in the city. Be it on a private space or a shoot on the road, they attracted a heavy crowd curious to see the celebrities. Some even waited for a few hours at the spot, till the shooting was completed.

But, there are a few issues of concern when shootings are permitted in the main areas of the city during day time.

The subway beneath the busy Avanashi Road Flyover was closed to vehicle movement for a whole day recently as shooting for a car chase scene was in progress.

In another incident, the police granted permission for a procession while the shoot for a film was also granted permission in the vicinity.

The police, however, have a different view.

For shooting films on a road or a public place a letter seeking permission is submitted to the District Administration a few days ahead of the scheduled date of the shoot. A senior police officer said that the District Administration gets inputs from the police, as regulatory order that is in effect prohibited assembly of more than five persons without police permission at a public place.

The police study the request and the location for the shoot and OK it when they feel that it would not affect movement of vehicles, or the people.

While the police officer said that, of late, they had not denied permission for any shoot, he recalled that there were indeed instances when the police suggested change in the location for the shoot if the fixed parameters were not adhered to.

The police said that the police were at a place where a shoot was under way mainly for security purposes and they allowed members of the public to watch the shooting, provided it did not cause inconvenience to road users.
