Number plate violations common

Violating rules attract Rs. 100 as FINE

Fanciful registration numbers of vehicles on the number plates in different shapes, sizes and colours are a common sight. Some show their love for the language by writing the number plates in Tamil.

Some go a step ahead and make it difficult for the police or event transport authorities by replacing numerical characters on the number plate with alphabets in regional language that the vehicle owner assumes to be an equivalent for the numbers.

Some road users have the names of their dear ones or pictures of their favourite political leader on the number plates. Other common violations in number plates are using eye catchy and flashy number plates other than white and yellow colour plates for private and commercial vehicles and printing numbers such as 8055 as BOSS. Some even use old CDs as number plates.

The number plate is not the place for one to show his or her love for a language or their family, says Coimbatore Consumer Cause Secretary K. Kathirmathiyon. He said that Motor Vehicle Act clearly states that the number plate should be in English to enable the vehicle identifiable across the country in a uniform manner in case of emergency and not for the sake of beautification or grabbing the attention of other road users.

Rule 50 and 51 of the Motor Vehicle Act has clear-cut guidelines on the size of number plates for different types of vehicles, the font, size and thickness of the characters and space between characters in the number plate.

Number plates should have four numerical characters after the alphabetical series. It should be ‘0001’ and not ‘1’.

Double and triple digit numbers are also not accepted. Violating the rules would attract a mere Rs. 100 as fine and this is claimed to be the reason why many vehicle owners continue to take the rules for a ride.
