NPTEL ties up with IBM for new course

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) along with IBM, the multinational technology firm, will offer a 12-week online course on blockchain architecture, design and uses.

The first-of-its-kind course, covering both the concept and application aspects of the technology, will be available on the NPTEL website from July 2018 in the country. The course will include conceptual and application aspects of blockchain technology.

Andrew Thangaraj, NPTEL coordinator of the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, said, “The blockchain course with IBM is the first in this genre and will encourage more companies to come forward to do the same.”

A report by Upwork Skills Index for Q1 2018, has stated that blockchain skills had become the most in-demand skillset in the technology industry.

The course has been co-developed by Sandip Chakraborty of IIT Kharagpur and Praveen Jayachandran, Senior Technical Staff Member and Manager – Blockchain and Smart Contracts, IBM Research - India. “The popularity of blockchain has moved from cryptocurrency to business applications across many industries such as insurance, finance, supply chain logistics, digital identity, healthcare and public sector. IBM’s collaboration with India’s leading academic minds to create a blockchain curriculum is a reflection of our commitment to enabling the technology to realize its full potential, while also addressing the increased demand for adequate skills for students and developers,” Mr. Praveen said. IBM will co-certify the course.
