DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Friday said that he was not surprised by the AIADMK landslide in the local boy elections, pointing out that the DMK had secured a similar victory when it was in power.
“There is nothing novel about the victory. The ruling party has conducted elections to the local bodies a few months after it assumed office. In the past, when the DMK was in power, it also had won a majority of the municipal corporations, municipalities and other local bodies,” he told reporters outside his residence before leaving for New Delhi.
Mr. Karunanidhi asked the elected representatives to rise above party lines and facilitate development works in their areas.
Asked whether he would call on Congress president Sonia Gandhi who had returned to the country after treatment in the US, Mr. Karunanidhi said that he would certainly meet her.
He reiterated his allegation that the State Election Commission did not pay heed to the complaints of the Opposition. “The State Election Commission even ignored the warnings of the Madras High Court.”
Kudankulam project
To a question whether he would give his views on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said that the Centre had constituted a committee and the DMK would convey its stand during the discussion.
