Nod for second college awaited

The district administration is eagerly expecting Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore, to sanction a second constituent college in Modakurichi Assembly constituency.

Student strength has been increasing rapidly in the Bharathiar University College of Arts and Science functioning out of the government school in Sivagiri town.

At the start of the academic year, all the 200 seats for the four new PG programs: M.A. English Literature, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Com CA, and M.Sc. Computer Science were filled, facilitating students in the graduate programmes to pursue higher education.

Since the fee structure is affordable and reasonable, there has been a huge patronage for the college from parents from rural areas.

According to local sources, the university is expected to start M.Com next academic year.

Steady increase in student strength to nearly 1,900 in just a few years for a handful of courses is a strong indication of the necessity for another college. There will be no hitch in starting another college once the University Senate and Syndicate accord their approval, District Collector S. Prabakar said.

According to college sources, two-thirds of the enrolled students are girls.

The idea of the district administration is to secure sanction for the second college within Modakurichi Assembly constituency at Ezhumathur where the government has already sanctioned 25 acres.

The proposal for shifting the college to Ezhumathur is being resisted strongly by the locals of Sivagiri.

The Sivagiri Town Panchayat had already adopted a resolution to provide land for the purpose, based on a directive of the district administration.

According to locals in Sivagiri, the college is located conveniently to benefit students of Arachalur, Modakurichi, Kodumudi, Muthur and Avalpoondurai towns.

According to the Collector, it was well within the realm of possibility for the university to have two campuses for the college at the two locations.
