No methane exploration survey under way: ONGC

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has clarified that it is carrying out a geophysical survey in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Pudukottai districts for oil and gas exploration and dismissed reports of methane exploration as rumours.

A day after members of various NGOs and political parties staged a demonstration at Karaikudi alleging that the ONGC was secretly carrying out a survey for methane exploration in the region, it said the surveys only related to oil and gas exploration.

“The ONGC is not associated with any methane exploration in Tamil Nadu, either directly or in partnership with anyone,” an official release said. It was carrying out a geophysical survey, the starting point for oil and gas exploration.

S.M. Rajkumar, president of the Karaikudi Makkal Mandram, which is spearheading the agitation, said there was a veil of secrecy over the operation.
