The 108 Emergency Management Services (EMS) has added a third exclusive neonatal ambulance to its fleet in the district.

District Collector S. Prabakar commissioned the ambulance in the presence of Joint Director of Health Services Mani, and other senior officials, and representatives of GVK EMRI that operates the 108 helpline service, earlier this month.

Specially trained nursing associates have been posted as Neonatal Emergency Medical Technicians in the ambulance. Pre-hospital care is provided to neonates en route, before admission to hospital for definitive care. The new neonatal ambulance will initially cover the geography of Gobichettipalayam and its suburbs. Two such ambulances were put to operation during July 2014 to cover Erode and suburbs. These ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as transport incubator, ventilator, pulse-oxymeter, suction apparatus, trans-illuminator and advanced life saving medications such as surfactants, and fresh frozen plasma to handle neonatal emergencies.

With the new ambulance, the fleet strength in Erode district has increased to 25.
