Students should develop the habit of reading books as part of personality development.
Teachers and parents should play a vital role in motivating the students to develop this habit, said educationists and volunteers who spoke at the inaugural of a two-day ‘Reading camp for alternative education’ organised by the Tamil Nadu Science Forum.
The camp is being organised to sensitise people, teachers, parents and education volunteers to the principles of the proposed new education policy to be implemented by the Centre from next year.
S. Umarani, Principal of the Government College of Education, who inaugurated the camp, stressed the impact of reading for intellectual growth and development of a person. The government school teachers have been setting a new wave in the recent times by registering cent per cent pass in public examinations. She urged government teachers to take similar efforts for motivating the students to develop the habit of reading.
S. T. Balakrishnan, state secretary of the forum, said the proposed new education policy focussed on five components – kindergarten, primary, teacher training, vocational and higher educational principles. Adequate awareness was being created through group discussion among teachers, educational volunteers and parents.
The objective of the reading camp was to drive home the important features of the new education policy.
N. Saleem, managing director, Team Speciality Hospital, R. Rajkumar, senior scientist from Village Resource Centre, M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, spoke. They emphasised the need for developing the habit of reading habit right from tender age.
