A huge sum is being spent, it is learnt, in Kumbakonam in connection with the Mahamaham festival. Southern Railway also takes step to improve facilities at the junction. But there is not even a single direct passenger train to Villupuram or Cuddalore from here. Authorities should consider the needs of residents and introduce a passenger train during the day.

“Maintain water level”

The tank on Mutt Street in Kumbakonam is being dredged. Since water supply channels had been encroached, a separate borwell to maintain water level and a new underground supply channel from Palakkarai must be created.

Woes of ex-servicemen

There is not even a single village in Tamil Nadu where there is no ex-servicemen family. They have many grievances. An ex-serviceman should be nominated to the Assembly like Anglo Indians.

Protective wall

The bridge across the Cauvery has been built to enable two buses to cross each other comfortably while the pedestrians can walk on both sides of the road. However, debris of the old bridge has been left on the river bed with protruded rusted iron rods and big cavities on both sides of the river bunds. There is no protective wall on both sides of the entrance to the bridge. Steps should be taken to erect walls on the sides of the slopes.

Helmets are essential

The court’s order making wearing helmets compulsory from July 1 is a right step. Some years back, noted neurosurgeon Dr. B. Ramamurthy had stressed the need to wear helmets and stated that people were sustaining head injuries in the absence of helmets. Loss of hair is nothing when compared to loss of lives.

Yoga, good for health

The UN has declared June 21 as International Yoga Day with the support of 177 countries. It will make yoga more popular. Yoga is being practiced across the globe and without any costly equipment. It will be a remedy for all types of human illness.

Bus service

The direct bus service between Adirampattinam and Kumbakonam on SH-66 was stopped some years ago. The TNSTC does not ply any bus to Mannargudi and Adirampattinam via Madukkur. I urge the authorities to operate direct buses on Adirampattinam-Madukkur-Mannargudi route and restore earlier services on the SH-66 for the benefit of residents and students.

Haja Abdul Khader,

Adirampattinam.

Tourism spots

Tiruchi district has a very few tourism spots such Mukkombu, Puliyancholai and achamalai. Puliyancholai is located at the foot of Kolli Hills and is blessed with a river known for unpolluted water. A few cottages built and managed by the panchayat are not maintained properly. In coordination with the panchayat and the Forest Department, the Tourism Department can develop the area for the benefit of tourists.

Dangerous to eat

Parotta shops are visible in every nook and corner of the city and have outnumbered the customary idli shops. Use of chemicals to whiten and soften the atta is dangerous to health. Food Safety officials should take stringent action against such practice.

Vehicle check

Transport authorities checked school/ college buses and vans recently. Many schools do not own the required number of vehicles forcing a sizable number of students to depend on private vehicles. Some private vehicles are not only badly maintained they also carry more students than the stipulated capacity. These vehicles should be subjected to a thorough check by the authorities concerned.
