NCW seriously concerned over safety of women in TN

Calls for appropriate action as per relevant provisions of law against all the accused in the Pollachi sexual abuse case

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed serious concern over the safety of women in Tamil Nadu.

Referring to media reports on the Pollachi sexual abuse case, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma in a letter to the State Director-General of Police T.K. Rajendran called for appropriate action as per relevant provisions of law against all the accused, and sought a detailed action taken report in the matter.

"The Commission is seriously concerned about the safety and security of women in the state of Tamil Nadu," she said.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the advocate for the victim told reporters that the police had taken action by arresting the suspects and detaining them under the Goondas Act.

"While we are trying to protect the identity of the girl and her family, some persons are blowing the issue out of proportion. There is no need to politicise the issue. As far as we are concerned, police have taken action on the complaint given by the victim. A wrong message spread in the social media that the accused were being let on bail created unnecessary furore," he said.

Police said they were investigating video clips of some unidentified persons assaulting two suspects detained by them before being handed over to the police.
