Families belonging to the indigenous tribal community of Narikurava who have been living in the streets of Tirupur city braving both rain and summer, are running from pillar-to-post seeking government support for setting up permanent shelters for them.

On Monday, 31 families who have made the Tirupur streets their home for the past many decades petitioned Collector G. Govindaraj seeking steps to build houses for their rehabilitation.

“We are giving the petition for the fifth time to the district administration asking to give us houses.

Senior officials have been sympathetic with us on every occasion but when we tried to follow up the issue with the officials in the lower rung, the responses were lethargic,” R. Raju (55), one of the Narikurava community members, told The Hindu .

Without a proper roof over their head, the community was finding it difficult to give proper education to their children.

“At least, we wanted to give some formal education to our children.” Mr. Raju said that the district administration, in response to the latest petition, had assured them that 18 families would be rehabilitated first.
