Nalini, a life convict in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has begun observing a fast at the Special Prison for Women on Sunday.

Advocate for Nalini and her husband Murugan, P. Pugazhendhi said Nalini had decided to fast in support of Murugan, who was fasting at the Vellore Central Prison since February 2.

Murugan was pressing for his release as per the State government’s recommendations. He demanded that all seven of the convicts be freed by the Governor’s order.

On February 8, Nalini had sent a representation to the Governor putting forth the same demand.

Cabinet suggestions

The lawyer said while many prisoners were released on the State Cabinet’s recommendations for various reasons, the convicts in the assassination case were still awaiting their release.

However, jail authorities said they are closely watching the health of both the convicts and have been asking them to break the fast
