Union Shipping Minister G.K.Vasan on Sunday said the State government’s move to release the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case was wrong and urged it to review the decision in the interest of the nation.

Talking to reporters here, Mr. Vasan termed unfortunate the government’s decision and said, “The government has taken the wrong decision in the name of granting mercy, keeping political motive and election in the mind. I am sure the people of State will not agree to the decision.

He said the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi could not be forgotten or forgiven by anyone. It was the duty of a responsible government to curb terrorism. “Curbing terrorism is not the duty of the Centre alone and States too have equal responsibility.”

On possible consequences in the event of the State government going ahead with the decision, Mr. Vasan said, “I only feel that good things should happen in the interest of nation.” He said the Union cabinet on Thursday last accorded sanction to name Ennore Port after the former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. A function in this connection would be organised in grand manner on YMCA Grounds, Royapettah, on Wednesday.
