Mortal remains of jawan to be laid to rest today

The mortal remains of sepoy Elumalai Balaji, who was killed in a copter crash in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, will be laid to rest on Monday.

The Russian-manufactured helicopter was carrying supplies to a forward post of the Army in the mountainous region.

The aircraft carrying the remains of Balaji landed at the IAF station at Tambaram.

It will be kept at the mortuary of Military Hospital at St. Thomas Mount and would be handed over to the family on Monday morning, Defence Ministry sources said.

Balaji joined the Army in 2003. He is survived by wife B.V. Kanmani and two sons.

Solatium ordered

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has expressed grief over the death of Balaji.

In a statement on Saturday, Mr. Palaniswami said he had issued orders to grant ₹20 lakh as solatium to his family.
