“More blood needed to meet demand”

June 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - NAGERCOIL:

People from all walks of life should come forward to donate blood as only 3,427 units of blood were collected from 83 blood donation camps conducted in the district during the financial year 2014-2015 as against the demand for 18,000 units, said Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan here on Saturday.

He flagged off a rally organised by the district administration in association with the District AIDS Control Society to mark International Blood Donors’ Day.

About 500 students from schools and colleges participated in the rally which was taken out from the Collectorate to SLB Higher Secondary School via Duthie School Road.

The students carried placards with messages on the importance of blood donation. Students from Government Ayurveda Medical College, Kumaraswamy Nursing School, Saint Xavier Catholic Nursing School, CBH Nursing School, Jayasekaran Nursing School and representatives of non-governmental organisations took part in the rally.

Mr. Chavan gave away certificates to two persons who had donated twice in 2014.

Deputy Director of Health Services M. Madhusoodhanan, Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital Dean in charge M. Radhakrishnan were also present.
